Daily Driver

Taking a cue from Ben in Pasadena, I'm posting a pic of my bicycle today. I know, I know you've seen it before but I've added a brake since then. Ha! Anyway, this is my main mode of transportation and it gets me around Gabriola day in day out, rain or shine. Yes, we do own a vehicle but it's used so seldom that a tank of gas lasts us six weeks or so. The real reason I'm posting my wheels again is to set up another post so you can expect to see a very different bike here soon. About the image: Yes it's from the screenless point-and-hope Nikon and no, your monitor hasn't gone wonky. This shed (behind the vet's office) really is painted lilac. If you're a bike geek, you might want to check out my other blog.

The Apple Shack

It doesn't look like much does it? O but the wonders inside! 15 varieties of organic apples plus about 5 different kinds of pears arrayed in peck baskets on shelves. $1.35 per pound. You weigh what you want, consult a weight-to-dollars chart above the scale for the total and leave your money in a jar. Another version of the honour system Gabriola style. At the end of Berry Point Road.

Point-and-hope Nikon again. This is getting old...

Our appointment was at 2pm. We made it. It's a small island.

Changing Of The Guard

Our little island in the stream, population 4000, has not one not two but three newspapers: The Gabriola Sounder, The Flying Shingle and the newest one, Island Central. Each publication has its dedicated fans but Mrs. Snapper and I don't want to miss out on anything so we read all three. The Sounder changed hands last week so welcome to the new owners who have relocated here from Alberta.

Into The Woods

I sometimes wonder what it's like to be a little kid here. Is the forest scary? Or inviting?

Another point-and-hope photo from the screenless Nikon. Hopefully, I'll get my Canon back next week.

Skywatch Friday #2

Alternate title: Eyeballs in the Sky, taken with my trusty old Canon Powershot G2 (which I have decided to have repaired). We were waiting for the Tsawwassen ferry.

Oddshots Monday > Moon and Lamp

A point-and-hope handheld shot made with my screenless Nikon. There are very few streetlamps on Gabriola which is great, makes for good star viewing. This one is at the Village Market and I managed to frame Mr. Moon with the crook of the post.

Happy Thanksgiving

Tomorrow is the official Canadian Thanksgiving Day but most folks we know are celebrating today (though some opted for yesterday). Regardless of which day the big meal is served, Mrs. Snapper and I wish everyone a fine holiday. We feel we have so much to be thankful for and hope you do too.

Autumn Leaf

I was shooting some fall photos for the local paper last month when I found this arbutus leaf stuck in my neighbour's fence. The original was in colour but since The Sounder used a different image, this one goes here in black and white. I made the veins pop by pumping up the contrast.

Cutlery

I've been operating under duress lately. For a week or so, both of my cameras have been down. First, my pocket-sized Nikon took a header and I lost the viewscreen. The camera will still record a photograph, I just can't see to frame it or see the result until I download to PC. Then my main camera, an older Canon Powershot just up and died. It's now in hospital in Victoria so we shall see whether it's repairable (no word as yet). So I've been having to troll through my files for images to post as no new ones have been created. Until yesterday morning when I took the Nikon and simply pointed it in the general direction of these knives. I had to do a tad of cropping but ended up with a postable image so I guess the Nikon will go back into my pocket for the time being and I'll trust to serendipity. Wish me luck!

Food Depot

PHC stands for People for a Healthy Community and the Food Depot provides free emergency nourishment for island residents who might need it. That food takes the form of organic vegetables grown by volunteers in a large garden just behind these flowers at The Commons.

Tall Grass

When one thinks of tall grass, the prairie provinces come to mind. Or the Great Plains states in the US. But this grass is over my head and I'm over 6 feet so I think it qualifies as "tall". And it's right here on Gabriola, on the west shore of the beaver pond at The Commons.

Oddshots Monday > Hanging Bike

This one's a mystery. Who would suspend an old but apparently fully functional bicycle from the side of a cliff? And why? The chain was old and rusted but the lock looked new so go figure.

Gabriola Gold

This is how I spent my day yesterday. And yes, I'm a little sore this morning.
