Antony in Egypt

Tonight at the Theatre Centre, Antony Holland presented the final version of his new solo show, One Man In His Time, a trip back to North Africa during World War Two complete with stories of double agents, outsmarting General Rommel and of course, the staging of plays all over the place. And, we were treated to some a cappella versions of period songs which were real crowd pleasers. The show's going on the road soon too. Not bad for an actor born in 1920 and still going strong.

New Novel

My wife Joëlle launched her new book, The Right and The Real, at The Theatre Centre this afternoon. Gloria from Page's Books was on hand to make the introductions and tend the merch table. The trailer features music by Gabriola's ace guitarist, Nathan Tinkham.

Sunday Signage > Slow Down

I was talking to some fellows who have lived on Gabriola for a long time and apparently, as recently as the 1970s, signs like this were totally unnecessary. Everybody used to drive like little old ladies but unfortunately, not anymore. Nowadays, people drive like maniacs, speeding everywhere and endangering their neighbours and wild and domestic animals in the process. Seems so out of place on this otherwise calm and peaceful little island. What's the hurry?

Painting The Pencil

The utility pole in front of the post office has been transformed into a beautiful bright yellow pencil thanks to a grant received by the Arts Council. The base is now notebook paper with a Welcome To Gabriola message. Local artists will be painting more poles very soon so stay tuned.
