Hitchhiking is an integral part of the transportation system on Gabriola. Everybody does it, young and old, wealthy and not so well off, and one doesn't have to wait long because everybody stops. This photo was taken while my wife and I were hitching to a meeting at the opposite end of the island. We got there nearly as fast as if we'd driven.

Nice view on a global theme
and a global idea we should all share!!
I'm a bit startled when I hear of someone hitchhiking. Perhaps safe in your environment, but hitchhiking in my country definitely is not wise; better to WAIT for public transportation!
Wow, such a difference from here. It is unsafe to hitch hike or pick up a hitch hiker! In fact recently here, a local college girl went missing and the last time anyone saw her, she was hitch hiking.
Here you know half the people that pick you up. Well, not really...in fact, every person who has picked me up has been someone new to me...but it seems like it because as soon as they introduce themselves they ask where you're going and usually take you all the way there, even if it's not where they're going!
Simply beautiful images. I love your blog
as a child in the 60s, I remember hitchiking being common, now...NEVER. now i only see it in the movies! love your shot - has the look of a movie still, like there's an interesting story that goes with the shot.
I remember hitchiking one hot summer day long ago and having to mostly walk because we didn't get many rides. That is the epitome of waiting.
excellent interpretation. i had forgotten about hitchhiking. something I have not done in a very long time.
Really great. Hitch-hiking is a good way to get around.
I remember back in the 70's here, hitchhiking was very popular....not anymore...everyone is afraid now.
A song by Vanity Fare, comes to mine...Hitching a ride.
A thumb goes up, a car goes by
It's nearly 1 a.m. and here am I
Hitchin' a ride, hitchin' a ride
Gotta get me home by the morning light
I got no fare to ride a train
I'm nearly drowin' in the pouring rain
Hitchin' a ride, hitchin' a ride
Gotta get me home to my baby's side
Ride, ride, ride, hitchin' a ride
Ride, ride, ride, hitchin' a ride
Long distance call I got today
She sounded lonely so I'm on my way
Hitchin' a ride, hitchin' a ride
Gotta get me home, keep her satisfied
instrumental break
Ride, ride, ride, hitchin' a ride
Ride, ride, ride, hitchin' a ride
A thumb goes up, a car goes by
Oh, won't somebody stop and help a guy?
Hitchin' a ride, hitchin' a ride
Been away too long from my baby's side
Ride, ride, ride, hitchin' a ride
Ride, ride, ride, hitchin' a ride
