Dancing Man
One week ago today the Dancing Man Festival was held at The Commons. The rain poured down but Gabriola spirits were undampened and the music was absolutely stellar with John Reischman and The Jaybirds headlining the show. Great stuff!

Prints In The Yurt
The art lab photos are going to stay up in the yurt for another week or so, so feel free to drop me or the folks at Poetry Gabriola a line if you'd like to see them in person.

Sandor
Sandor Csepregi visited Gabriola recently but he got here by fairly unusual means: He swam. I met him on the dock at Degnen Bay around 6:00am as he arrived after his crossing from Valdez Island. He was in the process of swimming from his home base on Pender Island to all of the other southern gulf islands in order to raise awareness about local food security issues. Michele's Hand Drum
Yesterday's art lab photoshoot was intense but enjoyable. At times, there was a queue so I had to work fast but for the most part, it was successful on all fronts. It was a bit like jazz improv, people showed up with their art, told me their stories and a photograph got made. The yurt provided a variety of lighting possibilities including the skylight which I used for this midday picture. Michele handpainted the African fox figure onto the head of her ceremonial hand drum. Beautiful and it sounded great too. Thanks again to Poetry Gabriola for making it happen. Photoshoot
If you're on the island, please feel free to come by the yurt at The Commons today (Sunday) for my all-day interactive photoshoot. Here's how it works: You bring a favourite piece of art (preferably but not necessarily of local origin) and we'll collaborate on the creation of a photograph of you and your treasure. Think jazz improv only with cameras and artwork instead of pianos and horns. Prints will be available next weekend. The whole shebang is 100% free thanks to sponsorship by Poetry Gabriola. Hope to see you there!
Note: This is the exact same post as yesterday. No, I'm not obsessed with self-promotion, I just accidentally deleted yesterday's post and couldn't figure out a way to retrieve it.

Mae Moore
Last Saturday, Mae played a concert at The Roxy and then on Sunday, led a songwriting lab in the yurt at The Commons which was sponsored by Poetry Gabriola. Great stuff!
And speaking of labs in the yurt, this coming Sunday, I'll be doing an all-day interactive photoshoot. Bring your favourite piece of art and collaborate with me to create a photograph. Prints will be available the following weekend.

4th of July
Joelle and I, along with our friend Steve from California, celebrated America's Independence Day by mailing off our applications for Canadian citizenship. So in about fifteen months or so, the three of us are gonna throw ourselves a little party. And then we'll send off our applications for passports.
