Well, I guessed correctly. I grew up in Devon where even now the occasional house is built thus, Can't imagine planners are happy about it but it keeps the technique alive. Dung used to be added too.
I don't know why what came to my mind ,when I saw your picture, is an episode of 'I love Lucy" where she is crushing grapes to make wine with her bare feet in a big basin!!! I'll come back later for the answer!!

Very enterprising. I actually think the squishing underfoot would be quite liberating.

Well, I thought grape stomping, too--but did not think of Lucy. We have an annual grape stomping contest in our town.
I thought he might be trying to dig out cockles from the sand with his feet - although I did realise this was unlikely.
I don't care what he's doing, but it looks like fun! I'm about to click to find out...!
