You have a shot here that ought to be hanging in a gallery.
Great photo. It works well in black & white.
I wish I could've blurred the background more to make the buck really pop out but I would've needed a telephoto lens and he was too close for that, maybe 4-5 feet away.
This image is so clear and so dramatic. That is so very close - 4 to 5 feet - surely they are not tame, are they?
Excuse my ignorance, but what does it mean to be "in velvet"? Their horns grow differently so how?
I do like the image.
There is no hunting on Gabriola and the deer have no natural predators so they are quite comfortable around humans. Below is the scoop on velvet from a website...
Antler growth is determined by changes in daylength and the amount of testosterone in the blood. In short, while testosterone levels are low, hard antlers are cast and new antlers begin to grow. When testosterone levels rise, velvet is shed and antler calcification is completed.
