Raptor Perch

A couple of years ago, there was a big problem with voles at The Commons. We read that creating a perch for raptors was a good, natural solution. Encourage the big birds to hang out, eat a few hundred of the little guys and voila! vegetables saved. So my friend Judith and I hauled this log from the beach and a crew dug a hole and planted it in the corner of the kitchen garden. It looks great, especially in the foggy early morning light, but to date I don't think anyone has seen a single eagle, hawk or owl sitting on it. Oh well.

That's a very eerie photo. Makes me think of a hangman's tree.
