Olympics
I happened to be at a friend's house (with a BIG TV) when we won a medal early on in the games. She was so into it, she had no idea I was taking the photo.

Mei Han's Zheng
The zheng is a large Chinese zither. This one was played by Mei Han at last weekend's Red Chamber concert at The Haven.

Suzy's
Ever since it opened nine years ago, Suzy's restaurant has been the place to eat and meet on Gabriola. But she's recently decided to move on so the business is for sale. The menu is interesting and varied but what I will really miss most are the exquisite desserts.

Sunlit Chair
I'd like to be able to say that this beautiful chair was handmade by a Gabriola artisan but in all honesty, I don't believe it was. It sure looks good in this rich afternoon light though.

Red Chamber
I've seen a few hot bands in my day. In terms of sheer virtuosity, The David Grisman Quintet comes to mind (early incarnation with Mark O'Connor on guitar and Rob Wasserman on bass). Then there's The Hot Club Of Nashville. Well, let me just tell you that Red Chamber can hold their own with anybody on any stage anywhere. The quartet plays traditional and contemporary Chinese music and just for kicks, their encore was a medley of Cape Breton tunes! Thanks to Poetry Gabriola for bringing us this amazing concert.

The Art and The Artist
Here, Hadancy seems to be taking a bite out of her finished piece but not so. It's just sort of a signature thing.

The Painting Horse In Action
She's adding a splash of red to a piece that was otherwise mostly greys and blacks. Every few brush strokes, she got a treat from her owner. And she got carrots from me when the paintings were done.

Sunday Signage > Hadancy The Painting Horse
Today, I witnessed something rather unusual (no, not the first Olympic gold medal won by a Canadian on home soil, though I watched that too) even by Gabriola standards. I watched this horse, Hadancy (Day for short), create not one but two paintings which were commissioned (and paid for in advance) by a European patron. Amazing! Day's owner Sandi put the acrylic on the brush and held the canvas while Day, with the brush in her teeth, made the actual brush strokes. I have more photos so stay tuned...

Lighthouse
It's been a while since I've posted a tourist picture. This is the Entrance Island lighthouse as seen from the end of a dead end street. It's currently still manned but is scheduled to go automated which seems a shame in an "end of an era" kind of way.

A Wee B&B
The cabin is 100 square feet. There's a bicycle wheel in the gate. It's the smallest and least expensive B&B on Gabriola. Mainly for cyclists, it sits on 20 beautiful acres at the south end of the island. No website yet but if you want to stay, just drop me a line and I'll put you in touch with the hostess.

Petroglyph #2
Gabriola is known for it's petroglyphs but I haven't posted a photo of one since way back in November of '08. This picture was taken at the south end of the island behind the church and it's been in the hopper for over a year. I'm posting it today because the thread going on over at The Gabriolan.
