Sunday Signage > Slow Down
I was talking to some fellows who have lived on Gabriola for a long time and apparently, as recently as the 1970s, signs like this were totally unnecessary. Everybody used to drive like little old ladies but unfortunately, not anymore. Nowadays, people drive like maniacs, speeding everywhere and endangering their neighbours and wild and domestic animals in the process. Seems so out of place on this otherwise calm and peaceful little island. What's the hurry?

Painting The Pencil
The utility pole in front of the post office has been transformed into a beautiful bright yellow pencil thanks to a grant received by the Arts Council. The base is now notebook paper with a Welcome To Gabriola message. Local artists will be painting more poles very soon so stay tuned.

Hippie Day
Today was Hippie Day which kicked off the week-long Isle of the Arts Festival. It was, like, far out. There was drumming, dancing in the grass, and a potluck but oddly, no pungent aromas wafting through the air.

Bike Polo
It slid under most Gabriolan's radar but the island was host to a bike polo tournament last weekend. Riders came from Nanaimo, Victoria, Vancouver, Seattle and Bellingham for three days of friendly but intense competition at Huxley Park.
